Questions & Answers about Regleringen som skyddar fisken påverkar fartyget i och med att kvoten är låg.
What is the exact function of i och med att in this sentence?
The phrase i och med att is a causative subordinating conjunction that means 'since', 'because', or 'due to the fact that'. It connects the main clause to the subordinate clause to show a cause-and-effect relationship, indicating that the low quota is the direct reason the vessel is affected.
How would the word order change if the quota was not low?
Because i och med att introduces a subordinate clause, it triggers the BIFF rule where sentence adverbs like inte must come before the finite verb. To say 'since the quota is not low', you would write i och med att kvoten inte är låg.
Could I use på grund av att instead of i och med att here?
Yes, they are very similar and often interchangeable when explaining a cause. The phrase på grund av att slightly emphasizes the direct reason ('because of the fact that'), while i och med att can sometimes carry a nuance of a changing situation ('now that' or 'as a consequence of'). In this context, both work perfectly to explain why the vessel is affected.
Why is fisken in the singular definite form here, when 'the fish' being protected is likely a whole population?
In Swedish, fisken can be used as a collective noun to refer to a species, an industry, or a fish population as a whole. If the sentence specifically referred to counting multiple individual fishes, you would use the plural definite form fiskarna.
