Questions & Answers about Användningen samt skärmtiden har emellertid ökat.

Why is emellertid placed between har and ökat?

Emellertid functions as a sentence adverb here, just like inte or alltid. In a Swedish main clause, sentence adverbs are placed immediately after the first, conjugated verb, which in this case is the auxiliary verb har.

Could I use dock instead of emellertid in this sentence?

Yes, dock fits perfectly here and means the exact same thing. Both translate to 'however', but emellertid is slightly more formal and heavily used in written Swedish. Dock is versatile and common in both speech and writing.

What is the difference between using samt and och here?

Samt translates to 'as well as' and is more formal than och (and). Writers often use it to tightly group two related concepts, like usage and screen time, or to add variety to a sentence that might already contain och elsewhere.

What happens to the word order if I start the sentence with emellertid?

Because of the V2 (verb-second) rule, the conjugated verb har must immediately follow the fronted adverb. The entire compound subject gets pushed after the verb, making the sentence: Emellertid har användningen samt skärmtiden ökat.
