Questions & Answers about Vad stilig du ser ut idag!
Why does the sentence use Vad when the English translation says "How"?
In Swedish exclamations, vad (which usually means "what") is used together with an adjective or adverb to mean "how". So Vad stilig... means "How stylish...". You will hear this pattern all the time when native speakers give compliments or react to things!
Why is the word order du ser instead of ser du? Doesn't the verb normally have to come second?
Usually, starting a sentence with a question word like vad forces the verb into the second position. However, this is an exclamation, not a question! In exclamatory clauses like this one, the subject comes before the verb, giving us the order: Vad + adjective + subject + verb (Vad stilig du ser...).
What is the word ut doing in this sentence?
It is part of the phrasal verb att se ut, which means "to look" or "to appear" (as in having a certain physical appearance). If you left out ut and just said du ser, it would literally mean "you see" with your eyes.
Why is it stilig and not stiligt?
