Questions & Answers about Det var det allra roligaste minnet!
How exactly does allra change the meaning of this sentence?
The word allra is an intensifier used exclusively with superlatives. While det roligaste minnet just means the most fun memory, adding allra emphasizes it as the very most fun memory or the absolute funniest memory.
Why do we need the word det before allra roligaste?
This is the Swedish double definite rule in action. Because the noun minnet is in its definite form and has an adjective describing it, you must also include the standalone definite article det before the adjective phrase.
If the noun were an en-word instead of an ett-word, would the adjective roligaste change?
No, the superlative definite form of an adjective always ends in -aste, regardless of whether the noun is an en-word, an ett-word, or plural. Only the standalone definite article would change, from det to den or de.
I thought rolig meant funny. Does this mean the funniest memory or the most fun memory?
It can mean both! In Swedish, rolig is used for both funny (comical) and fun (enjoyable). Given the context of a memory, most fun is usually a very natural translation, but the funniest memory is also perfectly correct.
