Questions & Answers about Grattis! Jag är glad för dig.
Is grattis used for all types of congratulations?
Yes! You can use grattis for birthdays, graduations, a new job, or any other achievement. It is a short and casual form of the verb gratulerar (congratulate).
Why is it glad and not glatt or glada here?
Adjectives in Swedish change their endings depending on the word they describe. Because jag (I) refers to a single person, the adjective takes the basic form glad. If you were speaking for multiple people, like saying we are happy, you would add an -a and say Vi är glada.
I often see för din skull used to mean happy for someone. Is för dig correct?
Jag är glad för din skull (I am happy for your sake) is the traditional and most natural way to express this feeling in Swedish. However, jag är glad för dig is heavily influenced by English and has become very common in everyday speech, so you will hear both used by native speakers.
How is dig pronounced in this sentence?
Even though it is spelled dig, it is almost always pronounced like dej in spoken Swedish, regardless of where it appears in a sentence.
