Deltagarna är på konferensen idag.

From Lesson 152:Place before time·Swedish

Questions & Answers about Deltagarna är på konferensen idag.

Why does på konferensen come before idag?
In Swedish, when you have both a place (where) and a time (when) at the end of a clause, the place almost always comes first. This is known as the Place-Time rule. Here, på konferensen is the place and idag is the time, so the place goes first!
How is the word deltagarna formed?
It comes from en deltagare (a participant). For nouns ending in -are that describe people, the plural form is exactly the same: flera deltagare (several participants). To say the participants, you add -na to the plural form, making it deltagarna.
Why do we use the preposition instead of i for the conference?
Swedish uses for events, gatherings, and many public places. Because a conference is an organized event you attend rather than just a physical container you stand inside, you use instead of i.
Can I change the word order and start the sentence with idag?
Yes, you can! Moving the time to the front is very common if you want to emphasize when something happens. Just remember the V2 rule: the verb must stay in the second position. If you start with the time, it becomes: Idag är deltagarna på konferensen.
