Questions & Answers about Den fantastiska uppfinningen används av alla.
How does används av work together in this sentence?
Because the sentence is passive, the verb takes an -s ending (används instead of the active använder). To show who is actually doing the action, we use the preposition av, which means "by" in passive sentences.
Why is there an -a at the end of fantastiska?
Swedish adjectives take an -a ending in definite phrases. Because we are talking about a specific invention, we use the definite article Den, add -a to the adjective (fantastiska), and use the definite form of the noun (uppfinningen).
What is the base form of uppfinningen?
The base form is en uppfinning (an invention). Almost all Swedish nouns ending in -ing are en words. To make it definite ("the invention"), we simply add the suffix -en to the end.
Does alla mean "everyone" or "all" in this sentence?
It can mean both! The word alla translates smoothly to either "everyone" or "all" depending on what sounds best in English. Here, "used by everyone" is the most natural fit.
