Questions & Answers about Publiken applåderar ofta när han trollar.
Why does ofta come after the verb applåderar here?
In a Swedish main clause, the verb must be in the second position (the V2 rule). Here, the subject Publiken is in the first position, so the verb applåderar has to come next. Sentence adverbs like ofta (often) or inte (not) are placed right after the verb.
If I wanted to say 'The audience doesn't applaud him', where would the object pronoun honom go?
This is where the object pronoun shift (objektsflyttning) comes in! In a simple main clause, an unstressed object pronoun like honom (him) jumps ahead of the negation inte (not). You would say: Publiken applåderar honom inte instead of putting the pronoun after the 'inte'.
Is när han trollar a main clause or a subordinate clause?
It is a subordinate clause, meaning it cannot stand alone as a complete sentence. It starts with the subordinating conjunction när (when), which is followed by the subject han (he), and then the verb trollar (performs magic).
The word trollar looks a lot like 'trolling'. Does it mean the same thing?
Traditionally, att trolla means to perform magic tricks or cast spells. However, modern Swedish has adopted the English slang too, so trollar is also used for internet 'trolling'. In this sentence, the context of an audience applauding tells us he is performing magic.
