Questions & Answers about Han har vunnit tävlingen och nått målet!
Why does vunnit end in -it, and why is the vowel different from the infinitive?
Vunnit is the supine form of vinna (to win). Vinna is a Group 4 verb (strong verbs). Instead of the usual endings, Group 4 verbs form the supine by adding -it. Many of them also change their root vowel, which is why the i in vinna changes to a u in vunnit.
How do we get the form nått?
Nått comes from the verb nå (to reach). Because nå is a short word that ends in a vowel other than -a, it belongs to Group 3. To make the supine form for Group 3 verbs (the form you use after har), you simply add -tt to the end of the infinitive.
Why isn't there a second har before nått?
Just like in English ('He has won... and reached...'), Swedish usually drops the second helping verb when two actions in the same tense are connected by och (and). The single har at the beginning of the sentence applies to both vunnit and nått.
Why do tävlingen and målet have different endings when they both mean 'the...'?
This is a quick reminder of noun genders! Tävling (competition) is an en-word, so it takes the -en ending to become tävlingen. Mål (goal) is an ett-word, so it takes the -et ending to become målet.
