Questions & Answers about Har du hört nyheten? Något otroligt har skett!
Why does the verb for "happened" end in -tt here (skett)?
Skett is the supine form of the verb ske (to happen). Ske belongs to Group 3, which consists of short, one-syllable verbs that end in a vowel. To form the supine (the verb form used after har), you add -tt to the infinitive: ske + -tt = skett.
Wait, why doesn't hört have a double -tt or an -it like the verbs in this lesson?
Hört comes from höra (to hear), which is a Group 2 verb. While Group 3 verbs take -tt and Group 4 verbs take -it, Group 2 verbs simply add a single -t to the stem to form the supine. So hör + -t = hört.
Why does otroligt (incredible) have a -t at the end?
Because it is describing the word något (something). Något acts as a neuter pronoun (an ett-word). Whenever you describe an ett-word or a neuter pronoun, the adjective must agree by adding a -t. That is why otrolig becomes otroligt.
"The news" is plural in English, but nyheten looks singular. Is that right?
