Questions & Answers about Vi tyckte om utflykten och hotellet.
Why does the past tense of tycka end in -te instead of -de?
Tycka is a Group 2 verb, and specifically Group 2b. These verbs have stems ending in a voiceless consonant (like k, p, s, or t). Because the stem tyck- ends in a k sound, it takes the -te ending in the past tense to make it easier to pronounce, becoming tyckte.
Why is the word om in this sentence? Doesn't it usually mean 'about' or 'if'?
On its own, om often means about, if, or around. But here it is paired with the verb to form tycka om, which is a fixed phrase meaning to like. If you drop the om and just say vi tyckte, it changes the meaning to 'we thought' or 'we held the opinion'.
Why do utflykten and hotellet have different endings if they both mean 'the'?
They belong to different noun genders, which you might remember from earlier lessons. Utflykt is an en-word, so it takes the -en ending to become utflykten (the excursion). Hotell is an ett-word, so it takes the -et ending to become hotellet (the hotel).
