Questions & Answers about Förlåt, jag hittar inte boken.
Why does it translate to "cannot find" when there is no word for "can" in the Swedish sentence?
In English, we often say "cannot find" to describe failing to locate something. In Swedish, it is much more natural to just use the simple present tense of the verb and say jag hittar inte (literally "I find not"). You do not need to add the Swedish word for "can" (kan).
Why is the word for "not" (inte) placed after the verb?
In standard Swedish sentences, the main verb is in the second position, and the negation word inte comes directly after it. Unlike English, Swedish does not use a helper word like "do" to make a negative sentence. So instead of "I do not find", you just say jag hittar inte (I find not).
Where is the word for "the" in boken?
In Swedish, you do not usually put a separate word for "the" in front of the noun. Instead, you attach an ending to the noun itself. The word for "a book" is en bok. To say "the book", you add -en to the end, making it boken.
Could I use ursäkta instead of förlåt in this sentence?
Yes, but it changes the situation! Both mean "sorry" or "excuse me". Förlåt is a genuine apology, like "forgive me", so you would use it here if you lost a book a friend lent you. Ursäkta is used to politely get someone's attention, which you would use if you were asking a librarian to help you find the book.
