Questions & Answers about Vi ser havet och skogen från gymmet.
Why do havet and skogen end differently if they both have 'the' attached?
In Swedish, the word for 'the' is attached to the end of the noun rather than being a separate word. Because skog (forest) is an 'en-word', it takes the ending -en to become skogen. Hav (sea) is an 'ett-word', so it takes the ending -et to become havet. You always have to learn whether a noun is 'en' or 'ett' to know which ending to use.
Why does gymmet have two 'm's when the base word is just gym?
When a short word ends in a single consonant with a short, quick vowel sound right before it, you usually double that final consonant before adding the -et ending. This spelling rule tells the reader to keep the vowel sound short. So the word gym gets an extra 'm' to become gymmet (the gym).
Could I use tittar på instead of ser here?
You could, but it changes the meaning slightly, just like in English. Vi ser means 'We see' (the sea and forest are simply visible from the gym). If you used Vi tittar på, it would mean 'We are looking at' (meaning you are actively focusing your attention on the sea and the forest).
Is the word och actually pronounced the way it is spelled?
Almost never! In everyday spoken Swedish, och (and) is pronounced just like the short English vowel 'o' (or like the Swedish word å). You will rarely hear the 'ch' sound at the end unless someone is speaking very slowly or formally.
