Questions & Answers about Vi tycker om att vila här.
Why does the sentence use tycker om instead of just tycker?
By itself, tycker usually means "to think" or "to have an opinion". But when you pair it with the little word om, it creates a fixed phrase that means "to like". You have to keep tycker and om together to get this meaning!
Why do we need the word att before vila?
att is called an infinitive marker. It works exactly like the word "to" in the English phrase "to rest". Because the first verb phrase is tycker om (like), the second verb vila (rest) describes the action you like doing, so it needs att in front of its base form.
How can I tell that vila is the base infinitive form?
In Swedish, the vast majority of verbs end in the letter -a in their base infinitive form. If you were saying "we are resting" right now, you would use the present tense form vilar. But right after att, the verb drops that present tense -r ending and stays in its base form as just vila.
Is att pronounced the way it is spelled here?
Usually not! Even though it is spelled att in writing, in everyday spoken Swedish the infinitive marker is almost always pronounced like the Swedish letter å (which sounds a bit like the "o" in the English word "sore"). You will most likely hear people say "Vi tycker om å vila här".
