Breakdown of Hon cyklar inte här.

Questions & Answers about Hon cyklar inte här.

Why is there no word for "does" in the Swedish sentence?

In English, we use "does not" or "do not" to make a sentence negative. Swedish doesn't use a helper word like "do" or "does". You just take the main verb (cyklar) and add the word for not (inte).

Why does inte come after the verb cyklar?

In a simple Swedish main clause, the verb always takes the second position (this is called the V2 rule). Since the subject hon is first, the verb cyklar must come second. The negation inte then comes directly after the verb.

Can this sentence also mean "She is not cycling here"?

Yes! Swedish doesn't have a separate "is doing" tense. Hon cyklar inte translates to both "She does not cycle" and "She is not cycling" depending on the context of the conversation.

How do you pronounce the word hon?

It does not sound like the English word "hon" (short for honey). The Swedish o here is pronounced much closer to the short English "oo" sound, like in the word "book".
