Questions & Answers about Jag pratar svenska.
Why does the verb pratar end with an r?
In Swedish, regular Group 1 verbs form their present tense by ending in -ar. The dictionary form (infinitive) of this verb is prata (to speak). To make it present tense, you just add an -r to get pratar. Good news: Swedish verbs don't change depending on who is doing the action, so it is always pratar whether it is I, you, or we speaking!
Can this also mean I am speaking Swedish right now?
Yes! Swedish does not have a separate continuous tense like English does. Depending on the situation, Jag pratar translates to both I speak (in general) and I am speaking (right now).
Why isn't the word for Swedish (svenska) capitalized?
Unlike English, Swedish does not capitalize the names of languages, nationalities, or days of the week. So, Swedish becomes svenska with a lowercase starting letter.
How should I pronounce jag?
In everyday spoken Swedish, the g at the end of jag is completely silent. You will hear native speakers pronounce it simply as ya.
