Indefinite articles and -ar verbs (en, ett)

"A" and "an": en and ett

Last lesson the article was welded to the end. The indefinite one is a separate word in front, and the noun goes back to its bare form:

  • hundenen hund
  • familjenen familj
  • barnetett barn

So the ending you already know tells you which to use. This is why Swedes call them en-words and ett-words.

I am a child.
Jag är ett barn.
We are a family.
Vi är en familj.
That is a dog.
Det är en hund.

Verbs ending in -ar

Most Swedish verbs are Group 1: add -ar, the same for every subject — pratar, jobbar, spelar, älskar.

I speak Swedish.
Jag pratar svenska.
He works here.
Han jobbar här.
They play football.
De spelar fotboll.
