Questions & Answers about Jag är barnet.

Why does barn have -et added to the end of it?
In Swedish, the word for "the" isn't usually a separate word that comes before the noun like it is in English. Instead, it attaches to the end as a suffix! Because barn (child) is an ett-word, we add -et to the end to make barnet (the child).
How do I know whether to use -en or -et to mean "the"?
It depends on the gender of the noun. Swedish nouns belong to one of two groups: en-words and ett-words. You just have to memorize which group a noun belongs to when you learn the vocabulary. Since "child" is ett barn, it gets the -et ending. If it were an en-word like en hund (a dog), it would get an -en ending: hunden (the dog).
Does the verb är change if the subject isn't jag (I)?
No! One of the best things about Swedish grammar is that verbs do not change based on the subject (who is doing the action). Whether it is jag (I), hon (she), or vi (we), the verb stays exactly the same: är. So är covers "am", "is", and "are" all at once.
Is jag actually pronounced with a "g" sound at the end?
In formal speech, singing, or when reading very carefully, you might hear the "g". However, in everyday spoken Swedish, jag is almost always pronounced like "ya".
