The formal additive conjunction (såväl ... som)

To express "both ... and" or "as well as" in a more elegant and formal way than the everyday både ... och, Swedish uses the conjunction såväl ... som.

Balancing Your Sentences

Place the two concepts you are connecting directly after each part of the conjunction:

  • såväl [first item] som [second item]
Yoga calms both the body and the mind.
Yogan lugnar såväl kroppen som sinnet.

When using såväl ... som, the two items should match grammatically. For instance, if the first item is a definite noun, the second item should usually be one as well.

Stretching improves both flexibility and strength.
Att stretcha förbättrar såväl flexibiliteten som styrkan.

Adjectives and Beyond

This conjunction is highly versatile. You are not limited to nouns; you can just as easily connect two adjectives.

Meditationen kräver såväl kroppslig som mental närvaro.

As long as the elements balance each other, you can use this pattern to link slightly longer, descriptive phrases.
