Progressive changes (allteftersom, efterhand som)

Gradual Changes with "allteftersom"

To express that a situation changes in proportion to another ongoing process—such as improving at a craft the more you work—Swedish uses progressive subordinating conjunctions. One of the most common is allteftersom (gradually as / in proportion as).

The potter gets better gradually as he works.
Krukmakaren blir bättre allteftersom han arbetar.
The ceramics become beautiful gradually as they are painted.
Keramiken blir vacker allteftersom den blir målad.
The glaze melts gradually as the firing goes on.
Glasyren smälter allteftersom bränningen pågår.

Using "efterhand som"

Another way to express simultaneous, gradual change is with efterhand som. It functions exactly like allteftersom to link two developing clauses together.

I learn to throw pottery gradually as I practice.
Jag lär mig dreja efterhand som jag övar.
He centers the clay gradually as the potter's wheel spins.
Han centrerar leran efterhand som drejskivan snurrar.
Her intuitive feel gets perfected gradually as she practices.
Hennes fingertoppskänsla blir fulländad efterhand som hon övar.
