The passive infinitive
Use the passive voice when the action is more important than who is doing it—for example, saying "the car must be inspected" rather than specifying who must inspect it.
To form the passive infinitive in Swedish, simply add -s to the end of the regular infinitive. For example, bogsera (to tow) becomes bogseras (to be towed).
| The car must be towed to the workshop today. | Bilen måste bogseras till verkstaden idag. |
| What luck that the car can be towed for free! | Vilken tur att bilen kan bogseras gratis! |
Modal verbs and the passive
The passive infinitive is most commonly used directly after modal verbs like måste (must), kan (can), ska (will), bör (ought to), and behöver (needs to).
| It must be inspected tomorrow. | Den måste besiktigas imorgon. |
| The brake must be adjusted soon. | Bromsen måste justeras snart. |
| The headlight and the filter will be changed. | Strålkastaren och filtret ska bytas. |
Phrasal verbs in the passive
When using a phrasal verb like fylla på (to top up), add the -s directly to the verb, followed by the particle: fyllas på.
| The oil must be topped up now. | Oljan måste fyllas på nu. |
| No water needs to be topped up. | Inget vatten behöver fyllas på. |
