Nouns from particle verbs

Navigating the ups and downs of modern matchmaking requires knowing how to read the situation. In Swedish, you can easily create new nouns to describe these events by converting particle verbs: simply attach the particle to the front of the verb stem as a prefix.

For example, lägga upp (to set up) becomes ett upplägg (a setup), and lägga in (to put in) becomes ett inlägg (a post).

The setup was good, but the post was bad.
Upplägget var bra, men inlägget var dåligt.

Vowel Changes and Suffixes

If the original verb is strong and undergoes a vowel change, the noun often uses the mutated vowel. Bryta upp (to break up) becomes ett uppbrott (a breakup).

The breakup, it happened after his excuse.
Uppbrottet, det hände efter hans bortförklaring.

Other verbs add a common noun suffix—like -ning or -nad—to the stem while shifting the particle to the front. Förklara bort (to explain away) becomes en bortförklaring (an excuse), and bygga upp (to build up) becomes en uppbyggnad (a build-up).

The outburst destroyed the build-up of the relationship.
Utbrottet förstörde uppbyggnaden av relationen.

Dating Dynamics

You will see this particle-shifting pattern everywhere when discussing the chemistry of dating. A breakthrough is ett genombrott (from bryta igenom), an exchange is ett utbyte (from byta ut), and charisma is en utstrålning (from stråla ut).

The breakup actually became the breakthrough for her.
Uppbrottet blev faktiskt genombrottet för henne.
The exchange of messages showed her charisma.
Utbytet av meddelanden visade hennes utstrålning.
