Drafting rules for a student association requires formal, precise conditions.
| For the association to work, we need a written version of the statute. | För att föreningen ska fungera behöver vi en skriftlig version av stadgan. |
Nested Subordinate Clauses
When stating complex rules, you often nest conditions: "The board considers that if X happens, Y applies."
In Swedish, if you embed a conditional or temporal clause (starting with om, ifall, or när) immediately after att, an important word order shift happens. The embedded clause takes up the first position inside the att-clause, triggering the V2 rule. The rest of the att-clause must immediately follow with its verb, then its subject.
Formula: [Main Clause] + att + [Embedded clause] + Verb + Subject
| Remember that if we send the notice late, the meeting is invalid. | Kom ihåg att om vi skickar kallelsen sent, är mötet ogiltigt. |
Notice the strict word order after att: the entire embedded clause (om vi skickar kallelsen sent) is followed immediately by the verb (är) and then the subject (mötet).
This syntactic inversion applies to any nested condition or time phrase:
| The board considers that if the notice is invalid, we do not count the absence. | Styrelsen anser att ifall kallelsen är ogiltig, räknar vi inte frånvaron. |
| We decide that when the absence is very high, the student gets a written warning. | Vi bestämmer att när frånvaron är mycket hög, får studenten en skriftlig varning. |
| The statute says that if you get a warning, you have an obligation to reply. | Stadgan säger att om du får en varning, har du en skyldighet att svara. |
| The chairman claims that if we ignore the obligation, we cannot apply other rules. | Ordföranden påstår att ifall vi ignorerar skyldigheten, kan vi inte tillämpa andra regler. |
| The rule means that if the decision is not unanimous, the guilty lose the right to vote. | Regeln innebär att om beslutet inte är enhälligt, förlorar de skyldiga rösträtten. |
