Formal Demonstratives
In formal, professional, or written contexts, Swedish often uses a specific set of demonstratives for "this" and "these":
- denna for en-words (common gender)
- detta for ett-words (neuter gender)
Crucially, these formal demonstratives are followed by the indefinite form of the noun. (This contrasts with the conversational den här / det här, which require the definite form). For example, instead of den här transaktionen, a formal text will say denna transaktion.
| We must approve this transaction today. | Vi måste godkänna denna transaktion idag. |
| Did you approve this transfer and this amount? | Godkände du denna överföring och detta belopp? |
| The company will move this amount from this account. | Företaget kommer att flytta detta belopp från detta konto. |
Plurals with "Dessa"
For plural nouns ("these"), use dessa. It applies to both en-words and ett-words and is followed by the indefinite plural form.
| These figures show an unexpected increase. | Dessa siffror visar en oväntad ökning. |
| As an investor, one can choose these shares. | Som investerare kan man välja dessa aktier. |
| Can you confirm this transfer and these transactions? | Kan du bekräfta denna överföring och dessa transaktioner? |
