Formal demonstratives (denna, detta, dessa)

Formal Demonstratives

In formal, professional, or written contexts, Swedish often uses a specific set of demonstratives for "this" and "these":

  • denna for en-words (common gender)
  • detta for ett-words (neuter gender)

Crucially, these formal demonstratives are followed by the indefinite form of the noun. (This contrasts with the conversational den här / det här, which require the definite form). For example, instead of den här transaktionen, a formal text will say denna transaktion.

We must approve this transaction today.
Vi måste godkänna denna transaktion idag.
Did you approve this transfer and this amount?
Godkände du denna överföring och detta belopp?

For plural nouns ("these"), use dessa. It applies to both en-words and ett-words and is followed by the indefinite plural form.
