Emphatic abstract reflexive (i sig)

When discussing complex or abstract concepts, you often need to isolate the subject from its context, talking about the thing "in itself" or "per se." In Swedish, this is expressed using the phrase i sig (literally "in itself").

Using "i sig"

Because it refers back to a third-person object or idea (it, them), the phrase uses the reflexive pronoun sig.

The simulation in itself is neither good nor bad.
Simuleringen i sig är varken bra eller dålig.
The avatar in itself lacks a will of its own.
Avataren i sig saknar en egen vilja.

Placement and Form

Most often, i sig sits immediately after the noun it emphasizes. It behaves as a fixed phrase, meaning it does not change form regardless of whether the noun is an en-word or an ett-word, singular or plural.

Is the illusion in itself the problem?
Är illusionen i sig problemet?

Alternatively, i sig can be placed at the very end of a clause to emphasize the entire preceding idea.

A virtual world is not dangerous in itself.
En virtuell värld är inte farlig i sig.

Discussing Digital Realities

This structure is extremely common in philosophical, technical, or analytical discussions—such as debating the nature of digital environments. It allows you to separate the tool from how it is used.

Will the digital interface in itself change the brain?
Kommer det digitala gränssnittet i sig att förändra hjärnan?
The artificial world in itself is not dangerous.
Den artificiella världen i sig är inte farlig.
