Dropping the Infinitive Marker
When listing multiple infinitive verbs connected by och (and) or eller (or), you only need the infinitive marker att (to) before the first verb. It is dropped for the rest of the series.
| I choose to disconnect, ignore the noise and pause. | Jag väljer att koppla ner, ignorera bruset och pausa. |
Notice how att appears before koppla ner, but also applies to ignorera and pausa. This mirrors English, where you might say "to disconnect, ignore, and pause" instead of repeating "to."
| He tries to ignore the notification, hide the mobile and be present. | Han försöker att ignorera notisen, gömma mobilen och vara närvarande. |
This structure works with almost any phrase that takes an infinitive, whether it follows a verb like försöka (to try) or completes a general statement.
| It is healthy to disconnect, rest and be present. | Det är hälsosamt att koppla ner, vila och vara närvarande. |
Even if the sentence introduces a new phrase with its own att, the coordinated list remains grouped together.
| I like to disconnect, leave the mobile and socialize instead of scrolling. | Jag gillar att koppla ner, lämna mobilen och umgås istället för att skrolla. |
Dropping the extra markers avoids a repetitive string of *att*s, leaving you with a clean, natural-sounding sentence.
| He likes to close down the feed, escape the distraction, and be screen-free. | Han gillar att stänga ner flödet, slippa distraktionen och vara skärmfri. |
