Conjunctive adverbs (dessutom, däremot)

Commuting and Public Transport

Whether you drive or take public transit, talking about your daily journey is a common topic in Sweden. The verb for "to commute" is pendla, and the word for "public transport" is kollektivtrafiken.

I have to commute to work.
Jag måste pendla till jobbet.
I like public transport.
Jag tycker om kollektivtrafiken.

The V2 Rule with Conjunctive Adverbs

When connecting two ideas, you can use conjunctive adverbs like dessutom (furthermore) and däremot (however).

Starting a sentence with one of these adverbs triggers the V2 (Verb-Second) rule. Because the adverb takes the first position, the verb must come immediately after it, pushing the subject into the third position.

Notice the word order (Adverb + Verb + Subject) in these examples:

Public transport is convenient. Furthermore, it is cheap.
Kollektivtrafiken är smidig. Dessutom är den billig.
The train is delayed. However, the bus is coming soon.
Tåget är försenat. Däremot kommer bussen snart.
The car is fast. However, it costs a lot.
Bilen är snabb. Däremot kostar den mycket.

Drawing Conclusions and Exploring Alternatives

Use the exact same V2 word order for adverbs that express cause and effect, such as alltså (therefore), or present an alternative, such as istället (instead).

The car is broken. Therefore I take the bus.
Bilen är trasig. Alltså tar jag bussen.
The monthly pass is expensive. Instead I cycle.
Månadskortet är dyrt. Istället cyklar jag.

Contrast and Conditions

When facing a crowded (trång) train or bus, you might use ändå (still / yet) to introduce a contrasting outcome. If you want to state what will happen if a condition isn't met, use annars (otherwise).

Watch how the verb follows the adverb in the second sentence:

The bus is very crowded. Still, I find a seat.
Bussen är mycket trång. Ändå hittar jag en plats.
We must hurry. Otherwise we will arrive late.
Vi måste skynda oss. Annars kommer vi sent.
You must bring the umbrella. Otherwise you get wet.
Du måste ta med paraplyet. Annars blir du blöt.

Vehicles and the Environment

A few more useful terms for discussing transportation include fordonet (the vehicle), trafikstockningen (the traffic jam), and miljövänlig (environmentally friendly).

While sitting in the traffic jam, I listen to the radio.
Medan jag sitter i trafikstockningen lyssnar jag på radion.
The bike is an environmentally friendly vehicle.
Cykeln är ett miljövänligt fordon.
