Before (före vs innan)

In Swedish, there are two words for "before": före and innan. While often used interchangeably in casual speech, formal Swedish distinguishes them strictly.

Before a noun (före)

Före is a preposition. Use it before a noun or noun phrase.

You must fast before the surgery.
Du måste fasta före operationen.
The nurse checks the blood pressure before the anesthesia.
Sjuksköterskan kontrollerar blodtrycket före narkosen.

Before a clause (innan)

Innan is a conjunction. Use it before a full clause (a subject and a verb).

The patient must not swallow anything before the surgery begins.
Patienten får inte svälja något innan operationen börjar.

Notice the difference: före operationen (noun) vs. innan operationen börjar (subject and verb).

We measure the blood pressure before the surgeon gives you the anesthesia.
Vi mäter blodtrycket innan kirurgen ger dig narkosen.
The doctor checks your blood test before she performs the procedure.
Läkaren kontrollerar ditt blodprov innan hon utför ingreppet.

Putting it together

Here are both rules in action:

We wash our hands before the procedure, before we touch the patient.
Vi tvättar händerna före ingreppet, innan vi rör patienten.
