Abstract nouns ending in -het (skönhet, trygghet)

The Suffix -het

You can turn many Swedish adjectives into abstract nouns by adding the suffix -het, much like "-ness" or "-ity" in English.

Crucially, all nouns ending in -het are en-words. This makes their definite forms completely predictable: they always end in -heten.

Security is important for the family.
Tryggheten är viktig för familjen.
Safety is important at work.
Säkerheten är viktig på jobbet.

From Adjective to Noun

For example, adding -het to the adjective möjlig (possible) creates the noun en möjlighet (a possibility or opportunity).

Is it possible to win the match?
Är det möjligt att vinna matchen?
We have the opportunity to travel abroad.
Vi har möjligheten att resa utomlands.

Abstract Concepts

Swedish often uses the definite -heten form when talking about abstract concepts—like feelings, conditions, or ideas—in a general sense.

Loneliness can be difficult.
Ensamheten kan vara svår.
Fatigue is a difficult problem.
Tröttheten är ett svårt problem.
In reality, he is actually very kind.
I verkligheten är han faktiskt mycket snäll.
Thank you for the kindness!
Tack för vänligheten!
