Why do we use por here to say 'in the morning'?
When you want to talk about a general time of day (in the morning, afternoon, or evening), you use por: por la mañana. But remember, if you are telling a specific time like we do in this lesson, you switch to de: Son las ocho de la mañana (It is eight in the morning).
I thought tomar meant 'to take'. Why does it mean 'drink' here?
While tomar literally means 'to take', in Latin America it is the everyday verb used for drinking beverages. People say tomo café or tomo agua much more frequently than they use the actual verb for drinking (beber).
Why is it just café and not el café?
Just like in English ('I drink coffee'), you leave out the word el (the) when you are talking about coffee in general. If you said tomo el café, it would mean you are drinking a specific, previously mentioned coffee.
