Questions & Answers about Desde luego que sí.
Does desde luego literally mean "from later"?
While desde means "from" and luego means "later," together they form a fixed expression meaning "of course" or "certainly." It is an emphatic way to agree.
Why do we need the que here? Can I just say Desde luego sí?
You need the que to link the phrase to your answer. In Spanish, when an expression of certainty introduces a yes/no response, que acts as a bridge. This is essentially saying "of course that it is so." You see the same structure in claro que sí (of course) and creo que sí (I think so).
How is que sí different from the sí que structure we are focusing on in this lesson?
In this lesson, you are learning to use sí que right before a conjugated verb to emphasize that an action really happens (like yo sí que estudio, meaning "I do study"). In this sentence, que sí simply follows an introductory expression to reinforce an affirmative answer, functioning more like saying "yes" or "so."
Can I use this exact structure to disagree?
Yes, you can replace sí with no to form Desde luego que no, which means "of course not" or "certainly not."
