Why do we use está instead of hay in this sentence?
We use está because we are talking about a specific bathtub (la tina). Hay means "there is" or "there are," and we use it for unspecific things, like "a bathtub" (una tina). If the sentence was "There is a bathtub in the bathroom," we would say Hay una tina en el baño.
Why can't we use es since a bathtub is a permanent object in a bathroom?
Even though the bathtub doesn't move, we always use the verb estar (like está) to talk about the physical location of things. The verb ser (like es) is used for descriptions and identity, but not for where a physical object is located.
I've heard the word bañera used for bathtub. Is tina different?
