What and who (qué, quién)

In Spanish, all question words carry an accent mark.

Asking "What" with qué

Use qué to ask "what." It never changes form.

What is that?
¿Qué es eso?
What do you need?
¿Qué necesitas?

Asking "Who" with quién and quiénes

Use quién to ask "who." Unlike in English, it changes depending on how many people you are asking about. Use quién for one person and quiénes for more than one.

Who is that man?
¿Quién es ese hombre?
Who has the key?
¿Quién tiene la llave?
