The Abstract Article: Lo
In Spanish, you can turn adjectives into abstract nouns to discuss general concepts, qualities, or "parts" of something. Use the neuter article lo followed by the masculine singular form of the adjective.
This construction usually translates to "the [adjective] thing," "the [adjective] part," or the abstract quality itself.
| Can you read the blurry part on the screen? | ¿Puedes leer lo borroso en la pantalla? |
| No, sometimes I only see the distorted part. | No, a veces solo veo lo distorsionado. |
| The blurry part and the distorted part bother me a lot. | Lo borroso y lo distorsionado me molestan mucho. |
You can also use lo + [adjective] + de to specify the source of that abstract quality.
| I have lost the sharpness of my vision. | He perdido lo nítido de mi visión. |
| The concerning thing here is your astigmatism. | Lo preocupante aquí es tu astigmatismo. |
| Has the ophthalmologist evaluated the concerning part of the case? | ¿El oftalmólogo ha evaluado lo preocupante del caso? |
