Reported speech for the past (había...)

Taking another step back in time

In the previous lesson, we learned that when a reporting verb is in the past (like dijo), an original present-tense statement shifts to the imperfect. But what happens if the original statement was already in the past?

When recounting a statement that originally used the preterite (simple past) or the present perfect, the reported verb takes another step back in time into the past perfect (había...).

For example, if a detective's original direct quote was "Interrogué al sospechoso" (I interrogated the suspect), here is how it looks as reported speech:

The detective said that he had interrogated the suspect.
El detective dijo que había interrogado al sospechoso.

Notice how the preterite interrogué shifts to the past perfect había interrogado (had interrogated).

To form the past perfect, combine the imperfect tense of haber with a past participle (usually ending in -ado or -ido):

PronounImperfect of haberPast participle
yo / él / ella / ustedhabíainterrogado
habíasplaneado
nosotros / nosotrashabíamosdetenido
ellos / ellas / ustedeshabíandescubierto

Confessions and alibis

This grammar pattern is incredibly common when recounting police interrogations, suspects' alibis, and witness confessions. Because you are establishing what happened before the suspect or witness finally spoke, the past perfect is essential.

The murderer stated that he had prepared a perfect alibi.
El asesino declaró que había preparado una coartada perfecta.
The thief confessed that his accomplice had planned the robbery.
El ladrón confesó que su cómplice había planeado el robo.
The guard stated that they had arrested the suspect without a motive.
El guardia declaró que habían detenido al sospechoso sin motivo.

Remember, just like with present-tense shifts, verbs like declarar (to testify/state) and confesar (to confess) work exactly like decir when setting up reported speech.

The witness confessed that he had changed his version.
El testigo confesó que había cambiado su versión.
The judge confirmed that the robbery had occurred at midnight.
El juez confirmó que el robo había ocurrido a la medianoche.
