Quick explanations (que)

Quick reasons with que

In casual spoken Spanish, you can use an unstressed que to quickly explain or justify what you just said. It acts as a shortcut for porque (because), similar to how "because" becomes "'cause" in casual English.

You will hear this structure very often right after a command to give a rapid-fire reason or warning.

Blow on the soup, because it's hot.
Sopla la sopa, que está caliente.
Hurry up, because the soup is already on the table.
Apúrate, que la sopa ya está en la mesa.
Eat it now, because it is getting cold.
Cómetela ya, que se enfría.

Explaining statements

This informal que isn't just for commands. You can also use it after regular statements of fact or obligations to quickly explain your reasoning.

You have to blow on it, because you will burn your tongue.
Tienes que soplar, que te quemas la lengua.
I don't want the lukewarm broth, because it isn't tasty.
No quiero el caldo tibio, que no está rico.
