Present probability (estará)

Wondering About the Present

In Spanish, the future tense isn't just for talking about tomorrow. You can also use it to express probability, conjecture, or wonder about what is happening right now.

When guessing things about a stranger's life, the future tense often translates to English concepts like "must," "might," "could," or "I wonder."

Who could that stranger in the plaza be?
¿Quién será ese desconocido en la plaza?
With that hurried pace, he must be tired.
Con ese paso tan apresurado, estará cansado.

Guessing Age and States

To guess someone's age or a condition like being in a hurry, conjugate tener in the future tense.

How old could the distracted woman be?
¿Qué edad tendrá la mujer distraída?
The distracted girl must be in a big hurry.
La chica distraída tendrá mucha prisa.

Guessing Actions

This applies to any verb when wondering what someone is doing or why. Notice how a future tense verb like caminará becomes "might be walking" when guessing about the present.

Why might that gentleman be walking so hurriedly?
¿Por qué caminará tan apresurado aquel señor?
What song could that lonely musician be playing?
¿Qué canción estará tocando ese músico solitario?
