Hypothetical situations (aunque)

Preparing for the Unexpected with "Aunque"

In Spanish, aunque can mean "although" or "even if".

To talk about a hypothetical or unverified situation, use aunque with a verb in the present subjunctive. In these scenarios, it translates to "even if".

Even if it rains, he can light the fire with this match.
Even if you are tired, you have to tie the whistle to the backpack.

Notice the pattern: the hypothetical condition uses the subjunctive, while the main action is in the indicative mood.

Even if the flashlight doesn't have batteries, we can use the whistle.
Even if the terrain is easy, we have to look at the compass.
Even if you don't need it, you have to keep the first aid kit in the tent.
