Formal purpose clauses
When you want to state the objective or purpose of an action in a formal or institutional context—such as in business, law, or administration—you can use the connectors a fin de que (so that) and con el objetivo de que (with the objective that).
Because these phrases express a goal or an intended outcome that has not yet been realized, they always trigger the subjunctive mood in the clause that follows them.
| It is necessary to implement this procedure so that everything works well. | Es necesario implementar este procedimiento a fin de que todo funcione bien. |
| They are going to implement the law with the objective that transparency improves. | Van a implementar la ley con el objetivo de que mejore la transparencia. |
Streamlining and optimizing
You will frequently see these elevated connectors paired with formal vocabulary related to improving processes, such as agilizar (to speed up / to streamline) and optimizar (to optimize).
| We changed the system so that the process is streamlined and efficiency increases. | Cambiamos el sistema a fin de que se agilice el proceso y aumente la eficiencia. |
| We are going to train the manager so that he optimizes time and productivity goes up. | Vamos a capacitar al gerente a fin de que optimice el tiempo y suba la productividad. |
Promoting and strengthening
These formal purpose clauses are also very common when discussing corporate goals or team development. Verbs like fomentar (to promote / to encourage) and fortalecer (to strengthen) fit perfectly into these structures.
| The company promotes communication with the objective that more transparency exists. | La empresa fomenta la comunicación con el objetivo de que exista más transparencia. |
| We reviewed the report so that the team can strengthen the strategy. | Revisamos el informe a fin de que el equipo pueda fortalecer la estrategia. |
