Formal connectors of finality (a fin de)

Formal connectors of purpose

Instead of the everyday para or para que, formal Spanish frequently uses a fin de (que) and con el fin de (que) ("in order to" or "so that") in banking, real estate, and legal contracts.

Using the infinitive

Just like with para, if the subject of both verbs is the same, omit the que and follow the connector directly with an infinitive.

You must process the guarantee in order to buy the property.
Debes tramitar el aval a fin de comprar la propiedad.
You must read the deed in order to understand the monthly interest.
Debes leer la escritura con el fin de comprender el interés mensual.
Does the bank require the deed in order to calculate the interest?
¿El banco requiere la escritura con el fin de calcular el interés?

Using the subjunctive

If the action is done so that someone else can do something (a change of subject), you must include que and conjugate the second verb in the subjunctive.

We need a guarantor in order for the bank to grant the mortgage.
Necesitamos un aval a fin de que el banco otorgue la hipoteca.
The notary explains the monthly interest in order for us to pay the debt.
El notario explica el interés mensual a fin de que paguemos la deuda.
However, the bank grants the mortgage in order for you to buy the property.
Sin embargo, el banco otorga la hipoteca a fin de que compres la propiedad.
