Expressing probability with "a lo mejor"
When you want to say "maybe" or "perhaps" in conversational Spanish, a lo mejor is one of the most common phrases you will use.
Even though it expresses doubt or probability, a lo mejor is strictly followed by the indicative mood, never the subjunctive. It works seamlessly with the present, past, and future tenses to talk about what might be happening or what might have happened.
| Maybe the keys are inside your handbag. |
| I am not sure, but maybe you misplaced the keychain yesterday. |
| Maybe you are not going to recover the ticket. |
Losing things and absent-mindedness
In this lesson, you will practice using a lo mejor to guess where misplaced items went and to talk about making careless mistakes.
| Maybe you are a little absent-minded and you forgot the handbag. |
| Maybe you lost the money through the hole in the pocket. |
| Maybe he doesn't remember that careless mistake. |
