Expressing hopes (ojalá que)

Expressing hopes with "ojalá"

To express strong hopes or wishes—like a speedy recovery from the flu—use ojalá.

Because ojalá ("hopefully" or "I hope") expresses a desire rather than an established fact, the verb that follows must always be in the subjunctive.

ojalá + (que) + present subjunctive

I hope the patient doesn't have the flu.
Ojalá que el paciente no tenga la gripe.
I hope he recovers from this cold soon.
Ojalá que se recupere pronto de este resfriado.

The que is technically optional, but using ojalá que is incredibly common in everyday spoken Spanish.

I hope the fever is the only symptom.
Ojalá que la fiebre sea el único síntoma.
I hope the syrup helps you with your throat.
Ojalá que el jarabe te ayude con la garganta.
