Correlative Conjunctions
Correlative conjunctions are word pairs that work together to connect two equal parts of a sentence. In this lesson, we'll use them to emphasize addition—perfect for talking about multi-format media like podcasts!
Tanto... como...
To say "both... and..." or "as much... as...", use the pair tanto... como.... It is great for emphasizing that two nouns or phrases are equally included.
| I like both large and small headphones. | Me gustan tanto los audífonos grandes como los pequeños. |
| I want to edit both episode one and two. | Quiero editar tanto el episodio uno como el dos. |
No solo... sino también...
To say "not only... but also...", use no solo... sino también.... Remember that sino means "but rather" and is used instead of pero to introduce a contrasting addition to a negative statement.
| She edits not only the audio, but also the video of the episode. | Ella edita no solo el audio, sino también el video del episodio. |
| He bought not only some new headphones, but also a microphone. | Él compró no solo unos audífonos nuevos, sino también un micrófono. |
Connecting Clauses with "Que"
If the second part of your "not only... but also" sentence introduces a new conjugated verb (a full clause), you must add que to the second half, making it no solo... sino que también....
| The teacher says that they not only broadcast, but also edit the program. | El profesor dice que no solo transmiten, sino que también editan el programa. |
| Not only do I like the episodes, but I also love the format. | No solo me gustan los episodios, sino que también me encanta el formato. |
