Stating reasons with por + infinitive

To explain the reason for an outcome—such as receiving an award "for doing" something—Spanish uses the preposition por followed by an infinitive verb.

They nominated him for acting at that highly prestigious event.
Lo nominaron por actuar en ese evento prestigiosísimo.
The actor received the award for demonstrating excellence.
El actor recibió el galardón por demostrar excelencia.

Using the perfect infinitive

If you want to emphasize that the action earning the recognition is fully completed and happened in the past, you can use por followed by the perfect infinitive (haber + past participle).

We have organized a tribute for having achieved that great triumph.
Hemos organizado un homenaje por haber logrado ese gran triunfo.
They nominated the singer for having sold a million records.
Nominaron al cantante por haber vendido un millón de discos.

You will see this structure frequently when talking about achievements, honors, and prestigious ceremonies.

The president decorated the researcher for dedicating his life to study.
El presidente condecoró al investigador por dedicar su vida al estudio.
