Questions & Answers about Правила запрещают провоз жидкостей, за исключением воды.
How does the phrase за исключением dictate the grammar of the word воды?
The compound preposition за исключением (with the exception of) always requires the noun that follows it to take the genitive case. Because of this rule, the feminine noun вода becomes воды.
Why does this sentence use провоз instead of транспорт or перевозка?
The noun провоз specifically means conveying or carrying items past a checkpoint or on board a vehicle (like luggage on a plane). транспорт refers to the transport vehicles themselves, while перевозка is the broader, general process of transportation.
What case is жидкостей in, and why?
It is in the genitive plural. It follows the noun провоз to express what is being transported (the transport of liquids). Noun-to-noun modification like this uses the genitive case. Since жидкость is a feminine third-declension noun ending in a soft sign, its genitive plural form is жидкостей.
Could I just use кроме instead of за исключением here?
Yes, you could say кроме воды (except water), which also takes the genitive case. However, за исключением is more formal and bureaucratic, perfectly matching the official tone set by the word правила (rules).
