Questions & Answers about Вы недостаточно выносливы, чтобы выжить в пустыне.
How does the недостаточно ... чтобы structure work in this sentence?
It translates literally as 'insufficiently... in order to'. Because the person who is not hardy enough (you) is the same person who would be trying to survive, the result clause takes чтобы plus the infinitive выжить. Note that a comma is always required before чтобы.
Why is the short adjective выносливы used here instead of the full adjective выносливые?
When adjectives act as the predicate of a sentence (describing the subject) and are modified by degree adverbs like слишком (too) or недостаточно (not enough), Russian heavily prefers the short form. While вы недостаточно выносливые is grammatically understandable, the short form выносливы is much more natural for this specific structure.
Why do we use the perfective verb выжить here instead of the imperfective выживать?
We use the perfective выжить because the sentence is about achieving a concrete, definitive result: successfully staying alive. When чтобы focuses on the actual completion of a result or having the capacity to achieve it, perfective infinitives are the standard choice.
Could I use the verb пережить instead of выжить to mean 'survive'?
