Questions & Answers about Он слишком ленив, чтобы работать в качестве командира.
Why do we use чтобы here when the English sentence just says "to work"?
In Russian, to express that a quality is too extreme to allow an action, you must use a result clause with чтобы (in order to) followed by an infinitive. You cannot attach an infinitive directly to the adjective like we do in English. It conceptually translates to "He is too lazy in order to work..."
Why is the short form ленив used instead of the full adjective ленивый?
Short-form adjectives are very commonly paired with degree modifiers like слишком (too) and достаточно (enough). While он слишком ленивый is also grammatically fine, the short form ленив emphasizes that his laziness is a barrier to this specific situation, rather than just stating a general personality trait.
What does the phrase в качестве mean, and what case follows it?
В качестве translates to "in the capacity of" or "as." It acts as a compound preposition that always requires the genitive case for the noun that follows it. That is why the sentence uses the genitive form командира.
Could I just say работать как командир instead of using в качестве?
Yes, you can. However, в качестве is a slightly more formal and precise way to express working "in the role of" someone. It is a highly common phrase in professional or official contexts, making it an excellent alternative to как to master at this level.
