Questions & Answers about Мне так надоела эта рутина, вот бы уволиться завтра.
Why do we use the infinitive уволиться after вот бы instead of the past tense?
With вот бы, you use the infinitive when wishing for an action you want to be able to do yourself (often translated as "if only I could..."). If you were wishing for someone else to do something, you would use the past tense, like вот бы он уволился (if only he would quit).
Why is the first half of the sentence structured as Мне так надоела эта рутина instead of starting with Я?
The verb надоесть (to be tired of / sick of) flips the English structure. In Russian, the annoying thing is the grammatical subject, and the person experiencing the annoyance takes the Dative case (мне). Literally, this means "This routine has become so tiring to me."
If the speaker were male, would the verb still be надоела?
Yes! Because the grammatical subject performing the action is эта рутина, which is a feminine noun. The past tense verb надоела must agree with рутина, completely regardless of the speaker's gender.
Уволить means "to fire". Does adding the reflexive ending -ся to make уволиться literally mean "to fire oneself"?
