Questions & Answers about Сломайся скафандр, и космонавт погибнет.
Why is the imperative verb сломайся used here if no one is being given a command?
This is a special conditional structure. In Russian, you can form an 'if' clause without using если by using the imperative form, usually followed by the conjunction и. While сломайся скафандр literally looks like 'Break, spacesuit!', it actually means 'If the spacesuit breaks...'. It creates a more dramatic, vivid tone than a standard conditional sentence.
Скафандр is a third-person noun (it). Why does it take a second-person imperative verb (сломайся)?
When using this specific imperative conditional structure, the verb is 'frozen' in the singular informal imperative form. It doesn't matter who or what the subject is—whether it is 'I', 'he', 'it', or even a plural noun like 'they'—the conditional verb will always take this singular imperative form.
Could we just write Если скафандр сломается, космонавт погибнет instead?
Yes, absolutely. Using если with the future tense is the standard, neutral way to express this condition. The imperative structure used in this sentence (Сломайся скафандр, и...) means exactly the same thing but adds stylistic flavor, making the hypothetical situation feel more sudden, fatal, or dramatic.
What is the difference between погибнет and standard words for dying like умрёт?
Умереть is the neutral verb for dying of any cause, including natural ones like old age or illness. Погибнуть specifically means to perish tragically, violently, or in an accident (like a car crash, war, or disaster). A fatal spacesuit failure definitely qualifies as a catastrophic accident, making погибнет the natural choice here.
